Isi artikelThis study compares males, females, and feminized transsexuals in terms of two variables: (1) endorsement of traditional sex ascriptions and (2) abidance by those ascriptions. A twofold Masculinity-Femininity scale was used to measure these two variables. The three gender groups were found to differ significantly on both variables. Since the first variable implies acknowledgement of the sex roles placed upon one's gender by the culture, and the second variable implies ability and willingness to fulfill those demands, it is argued that a gender that ranks high on one part of the scale but low on the other, or vice versa, experiences role strain in the area of sex roles. By this methodology, females were found to experience much role strain, males and transsexuals little. It is argued that the latter group, unlike females, is hereby shown to have made a relatively satisfactory adjustment in this area.
