Many studies have stressed the lack of rural-urban fertility differential in India. However,the alleged lack of fertility differential might be entirely due to the insufficient conceptual clarity of the "urban" variable. Studies have relied on census definitions alone to provide the limits of the urban category. Less effort has been made to utilize sociological and cultural yardsticks of measurement that would empirically determine the constitution of the urban classification. As an illustration of such an effort, the Parsis are used as an example of "pure" urban types, from whom we can derive an accurate picture of urban fertility.
