Questioning and answering are activities that always occurs in the learning process. In addition, to build interactions between teachers and students, asking questions can also be used to measure students' knowledge and thinking skills. Through a good question, teacher can help students to find the connection between concept and idea that is learned and also explore the knowledge possessed by the students. Moreover, it helps students to develop their thinking skills. This study was aimed to describe the questioning skills possessed by teachers in improving students' thinking skills, especially for high order thinking skills. Qualitative research was implemented in this study by using observation and interview as the data collection techniques. The results of the study showed that the questioning skills possessed by the teachers in two schools had not been able to improve students' high order thinking skills. This thing occured because questions with answers that lead to the memory dominated the questioning skills that teachers use during learning activities. One of the factors that caused teachers did not use questions to develop high order thinking skills was the lack of questioning skills concept in order to develop higher order thinking. According to these findings, schools should support and provide teachers’ training on how to improve questioning skills and high order thinking skills. In addition, teachers are also expected to continue to learn about new things and be aware of education developments nowadays. |
