Isi artikelIn Indonesia, there are a lot of tales, fables, legends, and myths. They are very famous, such as the legend of ‘Malin Kundang’, the story of ‘Timun Emas’, the story of ‘Kancil’ and many other tales. Since they are famous, almost many chidren are familiar with these stories. As children are already familiar with the stories, it will be easier when they read the translated version in learning English as a foreign language in Indonesia. The children, as young learners, will be interested in learning the English translated version of local stories. The story can be read by the English teacher, as a story teller. While telling the story, the teacher is also be able to explain the meaning of certain words. After giving a model how to read properly, the teaching activities can be continued by giving reading comprehension. The comprehension questions include the factual questions (about understanding, and the linguistic features) and questions about moral value. After finishing the exercise of reading comprehension, the students are asked to classify the characters in bad or good personalities. At the same time, the students can do role play, playing the good and bad characters. Following Bloom’s cognitive theory, the students are able to be asked to create a certain letter of apologize, a letter of complaint, or a thankful letter. By doing these activities in class, they not only learn English, but also internalize moral values. At the same time, they may enjoy the English lesson.
