Isi artikel
Character building itself is difficult as it involves a number of controllable and uncontrollable factors, let alone character building in foreign language teaching. This paper discusses character building through the teaching of proverbs. Proverbs are virtually time-tested truths which can become the guidelines for daily living. By teaching English using English proverbs, we can achieve two objectives simultaneously: the improvement of English proficiency as well as the internalization of values instilled by proverbs. The internalization of values can only be achieved through somewhat long discussion and assessment. ‘Repetitio mater memoriae’– repetition is the mother of memory – this is the essence of learning the proverbs. This paper also discusses how proverbs can be used as pegs to learn pronunciation, vocabulary and structure.
