Language learning and character building are closely related. In fact, positive character, comprising perseverance, interpersonal communication, tolerance, emotional control, confidence, and positive thought promote success in the learning (Machungaiwo, 2011). Character building is so important for learning process that educational authorities suggest it to be incorporated into school curriculum. In a language classroom for young learners, however, language skills are the main course, but character building is not part of the issue. Nonetheless, as Silverstein (1979) has shown, enculturation is through language and language learning in turn should provide students with ample opportunities to grasp and apply socially approved values and characters. Harmer (2007) has noted, however, the main problems most teachers face when teaching young learners concern with the learners differences such as varied abilities, expectations, motivation levels, and different learning styles. Coping with these, language teachers should at the same time provide students with chances to acquire good characters. In this paper, I will show how activities allow learners with different characteristics practice language competencies and build positive characters in a non-threatening environment. Following brain-compatible theory (Lucas, 2003), I will show how such learning development can be further enhanced when the learners are challenged and emotionally involved throughout the lesson. This paper will explore one way of creating and implementing such a teaching scenario and I refer to it as PACE (ie. Peaceful Activities which are Challenging and Engaging).
