Isi artikelThis 2-cycle classroom action research study was initiated by the unsatisfactory learning achievement in reading of Year-12 students of SMA 60 Jakarta. Preliminary study reveals that this was caused by both internal problems (lack of reading habit, low motivation, lack of vocabulary, and lack of mastery in reading strategies) and external problems (inappropriate teaching materials and methods/strategies). One way to overcome the problems is to use authentic materials, in this case are newspapers and magazines. The use of this type of materials is recommended as an alternative solution to the identified problems for its (1) vast range of vocabulary, (2) current language use, (3) function as the window to current world, (4) offer interesting opportunities to learn about socio-cultural aspects as well as current in development science and technology, and (5) potential to improve student’s reading skills and comprehension. Combined with proper teaching strategies, they can be the perfect solution to the above identified problems. Findings show that the given treatment has resulted in significant improvement in students’ reading skills. In addition, positive changes in students’ attitude toward reading activities and reading materials can also be observed. Yet, there remains a need for further classroom action research into the impact of such treatment on student reading competence.
