Isi artikel
Role play has long been widely used in English Language Teaching (ELT). This paper attempts to unveil the potential of this activity for building young learners’ character as well as to foster their language competence. To serve the objectives, open-ended role play was applied. In this activity, learners were provided with the theme, the opening of the plot, and some props. Then, they, collaboratively, continued the story and use the props in any way they like. In this attempt, learners’ characters such as creativity, courage, confidence, decisiveness, bravery, persistence, and focus could be nurtured. Furthermore, since the activity was done collaboratively, learners’ helpfulness, care, team playing, tolerance, and leadership characters’ may also be developed. Besides, learners’ were also encouraged to spontaneously produce utterances that their language competence can be fostered.
