It is true that literature is a source with many uses from both linguistic and literary points of view. Poetry is an extremely effective and labor-saving method for absorbing useful language and at the same time poetry also can humanize and warm the human soul. It is a material that may save the students from the pedesterian writing of the textbook writer. Poetry is important because it is an important and powerful aid in establishing in the students’mind a favourable mental set. This is a summary of what Billows (1961:238) says concerning the use of poetry. Percy Bysshe Shelley (in Richter 1989:340) declares poets to be “the unacknowledged legislators of the world”. This implied definition is threefold in its complexity, hailing the art of poetry as being all at once mimetic, inspirational, and yet elusive from the command of the poet. Shelley further says that poets are the hierophants of an unapprehended inspiration, the mirrors of the gigantic shadows which futurity casts upon the present, the words which express what they understand not; the trumpets which sing to battle, and feel not what they inspire; the influence which is moved not, but moves. One can see how powerful poetry is. Poetry is good both for the soul and the brain. A language teacher has to become a teacher and a guru at the same time, a guru in its native sense of the word which is sacred, spiritual, and elusive. This is a poet in Shelley’s words. One can be educated to become a teacher through the study of language and to become a guru through the study of poetry and literature in general. Indonesia is now in a serious need for gurus in this time of uncertainty for character building.
