Isi artikelResulting the course learned by target learners (students) meeting their needs and their expectations is the main purpose of the success of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teaching learning process. To match the students’ needs or expectations with their goal needs to be assessed before the course begins. This paper discusses the needs assessment process conducted and experienced by the writer as a teacher to know the needs and wants of the students of English in Widyatama University taking ESP for English for Business Communication Class (EFBC). This assessment process uses the theory claimed by Westerfield (2010) including a Target Situation Analysis (TSA) (what does the learner need to be able to do with the language in the future), a Present Situation Analysis (PSA) (what can the learner do with the language now) and a Context Analysis (CA)(what is the environment in which the learning will take place). Questionnaires and interviews are used to gather information in conducting TSA and PSA. To sum up, this needs assessment is very important in order to reach target learners’ goals or expectation. By finding target learners’ information about their needs and expectation after course in the early time, ESP practitioners know how to prepare the design of appropriate course materials. The contribution of stakeholders in supporting ESP course also takes a vital role for the success of needs assessment.
