Isi artikel
This paper proposes the inclusion of Cooperative Learning (CL) in the curriculum of English Teacher Education. Researches show that CL highly promotes foreign language acquisition and the Structural Approach to Character Development (Kagan, 2000) suggests that CL nurtures character development without setting aside any implemented curriculum. CL is mandated by the Decree of National Education Ministry Number 41 Year 2007 on Process Standard for Primary and Secondary Education; to be implemented in learning processes. Therefore, it is imperative for English Teacher Education program to embrace CL in its curriculum by carrying out a course(s) of CL and implement CL in the teaching of other courses. The underlying rationale is that student teachers would teach the way they were taught. In the CL course(s), through CL instructional strategies/structures, student teachers learn how to establish effective cooperative groups, research and theoretical perspectives that inform this method, and how they can translate this information into practical classroom applications. The implementation of CL in the teaching of other courses, specifically in language skill courses, is not only meant to foster student teachers’ English proficiency but also to also give them learning experience in the framework of CL and see CL in practice. The Structural Approach is suitable in this context because of its ease implementation, applicability for all ages, game-like elements, not to mention its support to language acquisition and character development. Numbered-Head Together, a famous example of CL structures, fosters students’ oral production and nurtures characters such as hard work, cooperation, and responsibility.
