Isi artikelTeaching big classes English is a great challenge for teachers because it is not mainly about transferring knowledge but it challenges them to manage the class and to create the learning environment in which students are able to develop their character This paper describes the cell group activities used by lectures in teaching English Entrant, the first level of general English for Binus university students which is normally big classes. The cell group method adopted from cooperative learning by Jacob & Hall (2002) gives rooms for students to develop both English skills and character building through its activities during one semester. The six pillars of character building becomes one of the main purposes of the learning achievement for BINUS University students besides the language skills. To achieve the target, this method is supported by Binusmaya, an online resource used in teaching learning at BINUS University to give opportunity for each cell group to develop their language skills and to work in the group. Through cell group activities, each member of the cell group is responsible to work together in reaching the target of language learning. Each of them has the opportunity to access Binusmaya Forum where they can upload, download, share and discuss material or problems raised. Each cell group is also responsible to write reports about their activities and to present the result of discussion in front of the class.
