There has been a long-running debate about which vocabulary learning is better: guessing the meaning from context or explicit vocabulary learning? This paper argues that guessing the meaning from the context as a vocabulary learning strategy should be practiced with caution, because it may have negative effects in terms of vocabulary learning and character building. This paper reports an explicit vocabulary learning through a series of vocabulary competitions (named VocComp) and argues that it may have more beneficial effects on the students’ character development. VocComp is a new computer-based vocabulary competition as a better alternative to the existing vocabulary games such as Spelling Bee and Scrabble. VocComp is believed to encourage the development of explicit vocabulary learning independently. VocComp is relatively simple to play. It needs only one computer connected to a projector and VIBE (Vocabulary Item-Bank of English). VIBE is now being developed further as a government-funded research project at the English Department, Faculty of Education. UPH. It is hoped that in the near future VocComp using VIBE software will play a more significant role in encouraging autonomous vocabulary learning activities that can help learners shape good characters such as independence, responsibility, and perseverance.
