In the Indonesian context, Pesantren (a typical Islamic boarding school) has played an unquestionably important role. Pesantren has produced a lot of graduates who have been in the key positions of policy making both in the government and private sectors. In the efforts of globalising itself, Pesantren has modified its policies, including using English, once considered a kafir language, to internalize its programme to make itself internationally recognized. However, this consideration has led to culturally, politically and ideologically conflicting with the culture internalized in English between the necessity of Pesantren towards English and the cultures and ideology in this language. Regarding this issue, this research is expected to find out the way how to harmonize the importance of English Pesantren needs, regarding the Indonesian identity empowerment, and the conflicting values in English. To do so, this research will interview kiai, ustdaz, santri, santris’ parents and oelamas in Depokmunicipality to find out win-win solutions regarding the issue. This interview will be connected to the questionnaires to be filled by the related parties. One of the prelimenary findings is that many pesantren institutions have different views on the importance of English, but they agree that English is an important language for them and English Language Teaching should be modified through trans-cultural flows.
