Teaching grammar tends to be theoretically applied. It means that teaching grammar mostly emphasize on the application of the rule and pattern without paying attention to the communicative skill. Students are expected to memorizing the complex rules and pattern of grammar and then do some theoretical exercises, like fill in exercises. It means that elsewhere in the sentence there are clues to the correct answer-the part to be filled in some ways collocates with other words in the sentence. Even though the students know the pattern, they often have difficulty producing the right sentences orally or in written. In this case the students need practice form as well as use. It means they need the materials to show them how the message is conveyed and why a person is speaking. To improve their understanding, authentic materials (oral/written texts) are offered to make them easier applying grammar. After understanding how to use the pattern and why the pattern is used, they can practice it in any context. In this case, delivering the materials about the character building through grammar lesson can be done by the selection of the valued authentic materials. The authentic materials are selected based on the needs of the class in building character. By learning selected authentic materials of grammar, the students can study grammar actively and get the knowledge of positive characters.
