The teacher’s role as a moral educator is becoming more and more vital nowadays as millions of Indonesian children get little moral teaching from their parents. Besides, value centers (mosques, churches, and temples) are also absent from their lives. Based on this current situation, the Indonesian government through Law Number 20/2003 which is further emphasized by the 2010 National Policy on Character Education states that the national education must aim at developing students’ potential to become Indonesian citizens who are tough, competitive, noble, tolerant, patriotic, dynamic, civilized, healthy, knowledgeable, capable, creative, independent, democratic and responsible, and what is more, faithful and devout to God the Almighty. Since English is one of the compulsory subjects taught in high schools, the teaching of English in this level must be geared to the fulfilment of the above goals. One way to contribute to the realization of the above goals is by teaching English which integrate character or moral topics or issues in EFL classrooms. Therefore, an alternative model to teach English with character building–based topics for EFL learners which can develop both the their language skills and good character is offered.
