Isi artikelThis paper reports on the results of a study investigating students’ motivational orientations for learning English Grammar offered at the English department of Haluoleo University. In-depth interviews with 51 students enrolled at the department were conducted to explore their reasons for learning English Grammar. Results of the interview were content-analyzed to enable identification of themes. Based on the emerging themes, a Likert scale type of questionnaire was developed and piloted with a convenient sample of 35 students. The final draft was then administered to a large sample of 154 students from other cohort (cross-validation) in order to collect sufficient data to utilize in statistical analyses. Using oblique rotation, the data were subjected to a principal component analysis through which constructs underlying students’ motivational orientations could be confirmed psychometrically. Two methods for extracting components – the scree plot and the Kaiser-Gutman Rule – yielded the same results of a three-component solution labeled ‘Introjected Motivation’, ‘Instrumental-Extrinsic Motivation’, and ‘Intrinsic Motivation’. Implications of the findings on Gardner’s socio-educational theory of motivation will be critically discussed.
