Isi artikelIn view of the current multiple crises facing Indonesian people there should be a shift in emphasis from a knowledge-based education to character-based education in which the students are not merely equipped with particular language skills but they are imbued with local value and ethic as well. Local value in this paper is referring to those beliefs held by individuals to which they attach special priority or worth, and by which they tend to order their lives (Ling & Stephenson,1998). Johnston (2003) uses the word “morality” instead of value for the set of a person’s beliefs which are evaluative in nature, that is, which concern matters of what is good and what is bed, what is right and what is wrong. Morality in this context can be religious, political, and other beliefs. The fundamental principle of the education is “to encourage students not only to recall facts and to think critically or creatively about the content of the subjects they learn, but to think wisely about it, too (Halpern, 2001). The present paper review the Indonesian moral values in the application of English Language Teaching by evaluating the English Textbook used at the High Schools (SMA).Textbooks use in the research were taken from several publishers such as Yudhistira,Erlangga, Andi Offset, and Department Pendidikan Nasional (BSE). The total number of textbooks were twelve (class X,XI & XII) published from 2008-2010 and there were 1.734 students tasks. Main attentions are given to tasks or activities (a) focus (b) the Syntax (c) the Social System (d) the Support System in related to the Indonesian morality, value, norm, or ethic. The results show that only 19 tasks or 1.09 % of the tasks have explicitly or implicitly embedded some of Indonesian values. It is, therefore, not a surprise if so many Indonesian people, particularly High School students, are not observance of Indonesian values.
