Most Indonesian students find English vocabulary difficult as they have to memorize many new words. In many cases, they would be able to memorize many words but subsequently forgot those words in later times. Also, some of them do not have the motivation it takes to acquire the necessary vocabulary. This paper discusses an innovative method of memorizing vocabulary effectively and increasing students’ motivation while infusing character building aspects. The method consists of: 1) selecting popular songs well liked by the students corresponding to character traits wished to be developed; 2) going through with the students character building aspects contained in the song; 3) replacing the lyrics of the song with vocabulary words needed to be memorized but keeping the rhythm intact so that students can easily memorize the vocabulary. This method can fulfill three fold aims: 1) students can be motivated to acquire vocabulary effectively; 2) students are inculcated with positive character traits; 3) students talent and interest in the arts especially songwriting can be developed.
