This paper is a summary and analysis of research and theory on black families in the past decade. In the macro-sociological section the theories on black family life are critically analyzed for their theoretical and methodological validity. The second section presents micro-sociological research findings on black family life and is more of a summary of the research literature on this subject. These research findings are presented according to the typical family stage sequences of black family life, from dating behavior to parental roles and socialization processes. In his overall assessment of works on the black family the author concludes that the imposition of ethnocentric values on the analysis of black family life preclude the application of much of the current research and theory to the development of a viable sociology of the black family.
