Isi artikel
This article examines the extent to which traditional although uncodified values persist in Karachi, Pakistan, in the face of socioeconomic developments through the selection or avoidance, for Muslim marriages, of certain Islamic months of the year and days of the week. Two four percent systematic random samples were drawn from the Karachi Muslim marriage registration forms of all of the 94 Union Councils, the smallest local government administrative bodies, in the Karachi Municipal Corporation for the years 1962 and 1965. First marriages only were studied, since a very small proportion of the two sets of samples drawn were second marriages. Although there are no formal prescriptions or proscriptions laid down regarding the timing of Islamic marriages, it was found that religious considerations very definitely influence the selection of certain months of the year whereas the selection of days of the week was primarily determined by socioeconomic considerations.
