Role differentiation and identification in the marriage relationship may be analyzed in terms of four dimensions: power, instrumentalism, expressiveness, and companionship. It is hypothesized that there has been: (1) and (2) a diminution in the traditional power and instrumental roles if the husband, (3) increased sharing of the traditional expressive role of the wife, (4) increased companionship, and (5) greater role differentiation the higher the social status. Analysis of approximately 1,200 interviews made in 1961 with suburban wives supports each of these hypotheses to varying degrees. The analysis is limited to interviews in predominantly middle-class communities which probably results in the truncation of the differentiation gradient.
