Emile Durkheim's writings on the sociology of the family have generally been neglected by American sociologists. Only in the last few years has there been an increased interest in his contribution to this field. This paper presents some of Durkheim's ideas on the family: his methodological approach to the study of the family and his views on the dysfunctions of divorce.
