A review of earlier work on the comparative "analysis of trends in the world literature on the family is followed by a descriptive analysis of trends revealed by a content analysis of the formal structure of the output of family research in the United States between January, 1957, and December, 1967. From the 8,000 items in the bibliography, 800 were sampled and 723 read for this content analysis. Some evidence for increases in the use of more advanced methods of data collection and data analysis is reported.
