This third Burgess Award Lecture, like the two that have preceded it, focuses upon empirically based theory-building within the family field. Drawing upon the author's cross-cultural research on premarital sexual intimacy, it demonstrates how norms and values intervene to affect behavioral outcomes. Empirical generalizations are stated in propositional form and the propositions are then converted into a "Theory of Relative Consequences," which sees negative affects adhering to value-behavior discrepancy. Restrictive societies, as compared with permissive ones, show evidence of both greater deviation from local standards and greater negative consequences attached to such deviation. Suggestions are made for further development of the theory and for applying it to problems of moral decision-making.
