Isi artikel
While age at initiating dating is earlier among those from higher than of lower socioeconomic status, and age at first marriage is earlier among those of lower than of higher socioeconomic status, within all socioeconomic strata those who begin dating early have a higher rate of early marriage. The reported relationships between early marriage, socioeconomic status, and subsequent marital instability, however, suggest that age at commencement of dating may have little relationship to subsequent marital harmony. Rather, it may be the length of the dating experience prior to marriage, as well as the implied greater sophistication in choosing a compatible mate that results from an extended dating experience, which yields a partial determination in the outcome of a marital relationship. Plans for future research employing a longitudinal design to test this hypothesis are briefly noted.
