Background. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is an eight highest contributor of the death in the world where 90-95% DM patients are classified as type 2 DM. The most common death of type 2 DM patients is caused by Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) due to the increase of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and the decrease of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or called dyslipidemia. Therefore, to prevent the incidence of CVD, the level of cholesterol in type 2 DM patients should be controlled through the administration of probiotic product for example yogurt that can balance the ratio between LDL and HDL level in their body.
Method. This study used secondary data that was obtained from experimental research of pre and post in one group. In this study, pre and post cholesterol in 30 staffs in Faculty of Medicine and Health Science Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and Atma Jaya Hospital who were type 2 DM patients was measured.
Results. Yogurt administration showed significant result of LDL where there was a decrease of LDL level from 103,5±30,70 to 78,50±18,90 while there was no significant change of HDL level (p>0,05).
Conclusion. Yogurt administration as an attempt to prevent CVD in type 2 DM should be considered due to the probiotic contained in yogurt that can decrease the LDL level so the risk of atherosclerosis which is the risk factor of CVD in type 2 DM can be alleviated. |
