Although marriage counseling has developed out of a social need, it has not as yet developed a consistent theoretical underpinning for its service. Marriage counseling operates all the way from a near-theoretical approach to an inferential post hoc explanation. Neurotic interaction, social casework theory, communication theory, and symbolic interaction and role theory have all been invoked to provide the rationale of marital counseling. No attempt to integrate or verify these theories on empirical or logical grounds is available.
