Professional psychotherapists and marriage counselors have often raised their eyebrows at the prospect of accepting unreferred or self-referred persons for psychotherapy or marriage counseling. This study demonstrates the similarity between the two groups in many respects, including personality profiles and financial risk. There is no evidence that the professionally referred subject is substantially different from the person who looks up his psychologist or marriage counselor in the yellow pages of a telephone directory.
