Statistics are lacking on the frequency of vasectomy for birth control, because operations are performed in doctors' offices and reporting of such operations is not required. A questionnaire was sent to 1501 active doctors in a two-county medical society asking for information on the number of vasectomies performed, whether doctors approve the vasectomy for birth control, whether they believe the operation to be legal, how successful they have found the operation to be in preventing conception, and their success in reversing the operation. A questionnaire was also sent to the fifty state medical associations to determine the associations' policies on vasectomy as birth control.
