This paper is an analysis of the very pronounced decline of the number of marriages in Mississippi after new premarital requirements were introduced on July 1, 1958. The differential impact of this decline on various subgroups of brides and grooms is investigated as well as its repercussions on marriages performed in states adjoining Mississippi. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the Mississippi State Board of Health are used in this study.
