The Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey was administered to three matched groups of married couples; one group was happily married, another group was unhappily married, but planned to stay together;and a third group was on the verge of separation.This study hypothesized that similar or related personality traits in husband and wife are related significantly to marital happiness, and dissimilar or unrelated personality traits are significantly related to unhappiness. The hypothesis was to a large extent supported.
