Female role conflict, when viewed within the context of the predominant American value system, affords the following implications: (1) it may not be as intense, widespread, or specific to the gender as has been suggested; (2) the credible evidence for it might be expected to derive from college coeds; and (3) the adaptation of certain females to the value system and of certain males to the occupational system might produce some interesting alternative marital patterns
