This paper poses the question:Does the concept of family developmental tasks have empirical validity in the sense that success or failure in the accomplishment of tasks in a given stage of the family life cycle is related to difficulty with tasks in later stages?A conceptual framework is developed in which this question is stated as a hypothesis, and conditions are stated under which the hypothesis might be tested. It is to be hoped that testing of the proposed hypothesis would enable educators and others to formulate generalizations that have more validity and precision than many of those presently being made from within the family development framework
