Isi artikelThis study investigates the possible effect of gainful employment of the wife-mother on the economic choices of the family as well as the attitudes of the wife-mother toward her employment. Interviews with 25 families in which the wife-mother was gainfully employed and 25 in which the husband was the sole contributor to family income collected data on both current and past income and expenditures of families. Significant differences were found to exist in the over-all economic choices of the one-earner and the two-earner families studied which could in part be attributed to the higher income of two-earner families. An over-all favorable attitude of the wife-mother toward her employment was found in the two-earner families as compared to a general 'negative attitude toward such employment verbalized by the wives in the one-earner families.
