The 14-year stability in young marriage rates suggests that a balance has emerged between factors which promote and which work against young marriage decisions. All data consistently point to higher divorce or separation rates and greater incidence of marital dissatisfaction among younger marriage! as contrasted with marriages begun by persons in their twenties. Hypotheses are offered for factors that may influence levels of competency and satisfaction among young marriage!. Age per se is not an adequate criterion for predicting marital confidence, but numerous factors related to readiness for marriage are reasonably well correlated with age. Chief among factors making marriage a poor risk are low-status background, limited education, meager economic basis, and need for continued parental support for most youthful married couples. Another is premarital pregnancy. Suggestions are provided for home, school, church, and other community programs as well as broad programs of social and economic development which may influence rates and outcomes of youthful marriages.
