As covered in previous chapters, a Private LOCKSS Network (PLN) may rely upon the LOCKSS program for its network management and support or it may operate as a locally administered entity. This chapter begins by briefly touching upon the technical and administrative reasons why organizations might choose one approach over the other and then provides a technical overview of best practices in cache and network administration in both cases. The chapter closes with recommendations for effective communication tools and strategies that may assist PLNs in their cache/network administration activities.
