Nowadays, technology is growing at a very fast pace, especially the transportation sector. This occurrence is caused by an increase of consumer’s demand that vehicle’s weight is decreased while maintaining the quality of the transportation, for example by using material with same or better mechanical characteristic, while having lighter mass. One of the example is the usage of Aluminium 6061 on a railway carriage. In industrial environment, one of the common method used to weld an aluminium metal is the GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) method, the other one is MIG (Metal Inert Gas) weldment, which the later is more popular. The parameters used in this research are based on the AWS (America Society Welding) standards. The specimens’ specifications are : length 15 cm , width 10 cm and thickness 3,2 mm, also using 0,8 mm diameter ER 5356 filling metal. Methods used to join materials in this research are : butt joint with square-groove weld and single v-groove weld. There are two weldment results made : convex seam (seam is not leveled) and leveled seam. The weldment results then undergo several tests, which are : hardness test, macro photo test, micro photo test and tensile test. Experiments show that specimen with convex seam (seam is not leveled) that gives the best weldment quality result is number 2 with 158,5853 N/mm2, whilst specimen with leveled seam that gives the best result is number 4 with 111,263 N/mm2. |
