Abstract
The ability of a cutting tool to perform is highly dependent on its material. The main requirement needed from a cutting tool is firmness, which relates to the combination of elements that made up the cutting tool. Increased firmness can be achieved from quenching. Quenching speed relies on mediums and methods used in the process. This analysis was done by experimenting on immersion quench process with horizontally and vertically positioned materials, and using circulated water and still water as mediums. The objective is to observe heat transfer process that occurs to determine which quenching method is the most effective and has the highest level of firmness. Material used is high speed steel type M2. From this analysis, it is concluded that the most effective quenching method uses circulated water as its medium and vertically positioned material, with required time of 76 seconds and heat transfer rate (q) of 44,55 ??W/m2, resulting in the highest level of firmness of 918,49 HV.
