Abstract
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a joining process of metals in a solid state. In this case the metals do not melt when the joint achieved. This joining method utilizes the friction of rotaring tool againts the linearly moved workpieces, so that the workpieces along the joint interface will be softened without melting and through the stirring process both workpieces will be connected to each other. In this study the most widely used material in the automotive industry, Aluminium 6061, is utilized. The device used in the FSW process is a vertical machine wtih a modified vise. The parameters applied during the FSW process are rotation speeds of the tool (958 rpm and 1541 rpm) and feed speeds of the workpieces (75 mm/min and 113 mm/min). The results obtained during the microstructure investigation and hardness test indicates the best joining parameter set is the combination between the rotation speed of 1541 rpm and feed speed of 75 mm/min, which resukts in a hardness value of 103.2 HV1 in TMAZ and of 73.3 HV1 in the nugget zone. Furthermore, the microstructure investigation shows that the number of grains produced during FSW increases with reduction of the grain size.
