Abstract
Background. The elderly population will continue to increase with time. This will lead to increased prevalence of degenerative disorders, such as cognitive function decline, balance disorders, and increased blood pressure. Balance disordersoften occurs along with decreased cognitive function. High blood pressure may be a risk factor for cognitive function decline. This cognitive decline can decrease the quality of life of the elderly, which has implication for independence in performing daily activities. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between blood pressure and body balance to cognitive function in the elderly.
Goal. The aim of this research is to determine the relation between blood pressure and body balance to cognitive function in elderly
Method. This research was an analytic study, with a design of cross sectional. One hundred and ninety five people were taken by using consecutive sampling method. Blood pressure was assessed using manual sfigmomanometer and interview. Balance function was assessed by BBS (Berg Balance Scale) and for the cognitive function was assessed by VFT (Verbal Fluency Test) and BNT (Boston Naming Test) questionnaire. The data analysis was using chi-square with P<0.05.
Result. The number of women elderly were more than men (68.7%).Most of all were >65 years old (71.3%).There is relation between blood pressure and body balance to Verbal Fluency Test, but there is no relation to Boston Naming Test (p<0.05).
Conclusion. There is relation between blood pressure and body balance to Verbal Fluency Test (VFT)in elderly.
