Isi artikelIn 2004, I published a paper (Lichtenberg, 2004a) that used aggregate time-series data to examine the impact of pharmaceutical innovation (new FDA drug approvals) and other variables on the longevity of Americans during the period 1960-2001. I concluded that "the empirical analysis provides support for the hypothesis that both medical innovation (in the form of new drug approvals) and public health expenditure contributed to longevity increase during the period 1960-2001" (Lichtenberg, 2004a, p. 386).
