Isi artikelDrawing on Durkheim's theory of social integration, an analysis of states' spending for public welfare and their divorce rates for 1960, 1970, 1980, and 1985 shows that the welfare state is not a destabilizing influence on family life as critics have charged. The only exception was in 1985 when the relationship was inverse: States that spent less for public welfare had higher divorce rates. Taken into account were states' population change and unemployment rates, population density, sex ratio, per capita income, median age, and race. While meriting further investigation, findings from lagged dependent variable analyses for each of the time observations show that states' past divorce rates are such an important factor in accounting for their current divorce rates that other potentially influential variables have little left to effect. Thus the connection that critics have drawn between the welfare tate and family breakup is a mythical one best.
