Isi artikelWe thank Wallman and Swärdsudd (2010) for their commentary in this issue of Social Science & Medicine which give us the opportunity to further discuss the methodological problems in studying mortality in early retirees. It is trivial that a person with poorer health has poorer prognosis and that the prognosis depends on the severity of their problems. To study whether early retirement per se increase mortality is, on the other hand, a real epidemiological challenge; that is, to find out what would have happened to those persons if they had not received a disability pension. In theoretical terms, the preferred approach would certainly be a randomized controlled study, which, of course, is not feasible.
