Abstract
Background. One of the skills required by a medical practitioner is the ability to teach (pedagogical ability). Teaching skills are needed by medical practitioner because there is responsibility to teach peers, juniors, and educate patients. Although the ability to teach is needed for a medical practitioner, medical students have not received adequate training on pedagogic skill. Peer-turtoring / peer-assisted learning (PAL) program is one of the methods that students can use to practice their teaching and learning ability. The PAL program has started to be accepted in various curricula of health education, one of them is at Faculty of Medicine in Atma Jaya University. This study aims to determine the advantages and limitations of PAL learning methods and the benefits obtained for students who become teachers in PAL (Peer Tutor).
Methods. This research is a qualitative research with Delphi analysis. The research data is taken from primary data and secondary data of PAL FKUAJ implementation. Primary data comes from tutee and PT (10 respondents respectively). Secondary Data Derived from data of PAL implementation FKUAJ 2010-2015. Delphi panel contains 15 people who follow three rounds of Delphi.
Results. Obtained 109 statements from data sources and 89 statements reached consensus of agreement. The benefits of PAL methods are felt by PT and tutee. PT has improved soft skills in terms of interpersonal communication, public speaking, organizational cooperation, and time management. PT also experienced increased acquisition of science. Other benefits gained by PT such as network improvement, attitude change, and improvement of teaching skill of PT. Improved ability of PT caused by involvement of PT in teaching. Tutee feels with PAL, the learning gained is greater than the regular lecture. This is due to PAL method factors (fellow students and small group learning) and flexible form of PAL learning. Other benefits that tutee gained are improved networking and tutee attitude changes. The limitation of the PAL method lies in the difficulty of standardizing PAL. This is because there are various factors such as teaching experience, character, prior knowledge, and different motivation from each PT. Another thing that limits PAL is the difficulty of determining the timing of PAL and PT has other academic responsibilities so they can't focus on PAL. There is a need to find the form of learning and material that best suits the PAL method.
Conclusion. This study found that PAL method provides more benefit for tutee and PT. PAL improves tutee learning when compared to regular lectures, adds networking, and changes tutee attitudes. PT will develop soft skills, science, and teaching skills. Some limitations of PAL are found so that in the implementation of the next PAL some plan can be drawn up to minimize these limitations.
