Abstract
Background. Students’ lack of knowledge about future medical career options impact their motivation and career preferences.
Objectives. This study aimed to investigate the motivation and career preferences of medical students at the School of Medicine Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
Methods. 26 respondents were selected purposively. They were first exposed to social media intervention for 7 days. It was followed by a 1 day medical career
development seminar. The quantitative data were collected using the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) and were analyzed using Friedman. The qualitative data
were obtained from interviews and were analyzed using Content Analysis. Data were acquired during pre-intervention and post-interventions.
Results. There were an increased intrinsic motivation, decreased extrinsic motivation along with the amotivation. However they were not found to be significant (p>0.05). After the post-interventions, respondents showed their increment in knowledge and interests towards the explained choices of careers.
However, they were not followed by career preference changes. Respondents also expressed the importance of career information for students.
Conclusions. Social media intervention was able to increase knowledge and students’ interest towards a certain career. On the other hand, career seminar intervention was able to increase their knowledge, students’ interests toward certain career and motivation. However, both interventions did not show effect to their
career preferences.
