Isi artikel
Diagnoses in medicine may be understood in terms of their validity, that is the extent to which they refer to discrete entities with natural boundaries that separate them from other disorders; and their utility, that is the extent to which they predict outcome or treatment response (Kendell & Jablensky, 2003). Although the validity and utility of a diagnosis commonly overlap, and in an ideal world should coincide, they are discrete. A valid concept may not necessarily be useful. Conversely, even when they lack validity, diagnostic concepts may still possess high utility by virtue of the information they convey about aetiology, outcome and treatment.
