Isi artikelRecent sociolinguistic studies shows that the existence and position of many local languages in Indonesia such as Javanese, Banjarese, Balinese and Minangkabau have been shifting; the Indonesian language seems to have taken the role of the local language in various domains. This language situation seems to be closely related to the positive attitude of the local people to the national language. A study was conducted in three main language areas in Minangkabau region in West Sumatra to observe the language behavior of the Minangkabau and its probable effects to the use of Minangkabau proverbs as a means of teaching moral and cultural values to Minangkabau people. The study adopted both quantitative and qualitative approaches and used questionnaires, in-depth interviews and participant observation for data collection. The research shows that first, code-switching and code-mixing are very common in Minangkabau families and societies. Second, Minangkabau people, especially young generation, have a positive attitude to the Indonesian language. This attitude contributes to the increasing use of the national language particularly among middle and upper class families and among those leaving in a heterogeneous society in the cities. Third, this language situation has very much affected the degree of people’s knowledge and use of Minangkabau proverbs, i.e., those leaving in the village with relatively homogeneous environment know and use more proverbs than those leaving in the cities in heterogeneous societies.
