The co-existence of the national language, bahasa Indonesia, and a local language in one language community sometimes forces the local language to the corner and may end up in extinction. This study focused on language use in the daily life of school students from secondary school up to the university in Palu. The study showed that most of the students are no longer able to speak local languages fluently. The majority of them have acquired bahasa Indonesia as their first language, and they have almost no more motivation to learn their parents’ mother tongue. In daily interactions at home, school, and in the community, they almost never speak a local language any more because they have been monolingual in bahasa Indonesia.
