Isi artikelDespite thirty plus years of public education and outreach to victims, rape remains a seriously under-reported and under-punished crime. In the United States, for example, only 19 percent of female rape victims and 13 percent of male rape victims identified by the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS) chose to report their victimization to the police, compared to 29 percent of female and 26 percennt of male physical assault victims (Tjaden & Thoesses, 1997: 36). Thus, rape victims, regardless of gender, are about half as likely as physical assault victims to seek criminal justice redress. Even when rape survivors choose to report their victimization to the police, they are unlikely to see their rapists convicted of a crime.
